Temple of Zeus

Temple of Zeus. I made this for my sister's birthday and threw her a party at The Dining Room at the Westin in KL. Needless to say, the inspiration was the Temple of Zeus in Athens, Greece. We had just returned from a 2 week vacation in Europe where we spent a few days visiting the ruins of ancient Greece in Athens and Temple of Zeus was my sister's favourite so I made this cake which took almost a week to complete and could not be a surprise because we lived in the same house!! The pillars are made from gumpaste, hand sculpted onto lollipop sticks. The cake is an orange butter cake with an orange butter cream filling.

Sakura

Sakura. This was made during Chinese New Year and of course the fake branches of the sakura flower that is so prevalent during Chinese New Year was the inspiration. I made this as a gift to an aunt and needless to say, it made an impression! Again, 100% edible with the flowers made from gumpaste and everything else fondant.

Xmas Tree

Xmas Tree. My mother wanted me to make a cake to take it to church on Christmas day for the potluck they were having. I used butter cream for needles of the pine tree and chocolate ganache for the bark of tree. Snowflake icing decorations from Wilton used together with gold and silver beads and a final sprinkling of icing sugar to put some realism into it. This was very popular and I ended up getting requests for classes which was quite flattering! But then again, I brought myself back down to earth by reminding myself it was Sungai Siput (my hometown) where they hardly ever have cake decorating classes

Frog Prince

Frog Prince. My friend Tang who is also ex-housemate No.3 was the last housemate to move out hence her title (no.3). She celebrated her birthday together with Alice but unlike Alice who specified she wanted a "pretty cake", Tang specified that she did not want a pretty cake, she wanted a yummy one, specifically my signature chocolate cake with chocolate ganache which meant no sugar paste. So I had to be creative and finally made this Frog Prince for her. Everyone found it funny and she kissed the frog prince as she made her birthday wish!

Make-up Bag

Make-up Bag. I made this for Alice's birthday. Alice is my ex-housemate No.2, we lived together for a long time while in college and part of our working life and we have always called her the ICI Queen because of how she always have impeccable make up on whenever we went out and she was the first to use Bobbi Brown extensively and we all caught on shortly thereafter! So I thought a make up bag would be apt. He favourite cake is fruit cake so this was a golden fruitcake with rum coated with rum flavoured butter cream then covered with sugar paste. I know Alice loved it. Made me happy as well

People

People Cake. I made this for my colleague's farewell and then another similar design for my sister's colleague's farewell which resulted in another order from her colleague for her son's birthday with just a group of people cheering. The colours of the cake attracted a lot of attention and people just liked how bright and colourful it looked. I use only Wilton colours, I do think it looks much better even in pictures.

Fairy Cake

Fairy Cake. This is a mushroom shaped fairy house with small little fairies on top. My friend wanted this for her niece to take it to her school and I initially had trouble finding an appropriate cake tin for this shape but finally found one that was a rounded cake tin and put it on top of a small 6 inch cake. The children were fascinated by the fairies on the cake and surrounded the cake and absolutely loved it, so much so that all the other cakes in the class were completely ignored!

Monsters

Trash Monster. This monster reminded me of Oscar the monster in the trash can in Sesame Street, although this is probably an uglier and nastier version!! Not one of my favourites but it did serve the purpose as one of the many Halloween cakes

Monster Kid
on the right here is another story. This was very popular put smiles on both adults and children. People thought he looked like a handsome little son of Frankenstein!>>>>>>>>

Rubber Ducky

Rubber Ducky. My friend Nick wanted a duck shaped cake for his daughter's birthday so I made this 3D Duck with a Wilton 3D mould and covered it with piped butter cream. This was a banana cake covered with butter cream. I finally placed it on a rectangular cake that I made to look like a pond which is not shown here but on hindsight I think surrounding the duck with soap bubbles like in a bathtub might have been a better idea as it would have looked more playful. So when I next got a chance to make a rubber ducky for my friend Jemei's daughter Jacklyn, that's exactly what I did!

Ladybugs

Ladybugs. The ladybug cupcakes that I saw originally were full sized cupcakes decorated with fondant but I wanted to make something from butter cream and I thought that small ladybugs would make them more realistic and imagining dozens of ladybugs staring at each other made me think they would look really cute and I set about making lots of these and placing them together. It turned out to be one of the more popular designs and people just loved how they looked especially when there are lots of them together.

Torture Thy Limbs

Torture Thy Limbs. That was what my sister gave me as the name of one of the games and asked me to be creative. I had no idea that it was a game of passing plastic eyeballs using a fake bloody limb and made these cupcakes. Made from fondant, these are 100% edible and fully sculpted by hand. The kids cringed at these and unfortunately some cried when presented with these as prizes!! Ah well, nevertheless I was still very proud of them. At least I know it looked real!

Mummified

Mummified. That was the title of the game all the kids were participating in and they wrapped each other up in toilet paper. The cupcakes were made as prizes for the winners and they were so popular that we had every kid scrambling to participate. I thought this would look quite cute with the eyes peeking out of bandages and with so many of them staring out from a box but never thought it would be so popular! The children who won other games were begging for this set of cup cakes instead!

Witches Galore

Witches Galore. These cupcakes are 100% edible. The witch's hat is made of sugar cookies and piped with Royal Icing. The face is a vanilla cupcake with butter cream. The down side to this cupcake is that after staying for a while the cookie softens and breaks very easily and of course is not so good to eat but it is still an excellent option for kids because it is 100% edible.

Simply Roses

Simply Roses. The assignment when I was doing this cake as the finale for the classes I was attending was a cake with a few pink roses in the middle and green leaves. Of course we could be creative so I wanted to keep it simple with just 2 colours so that the roses would be the main feature and provide a nice contrast.

This is an 8 inch butter cake with roses made from krimwell buttercream. The red is a combination of Wilton's Red Red and Christmas Red. It took me a total of 6 hours to complete the cake.

The BFF Cake

The BFF Cake. Made for my friend Cheow, the cake had 7 mini monsters in total. One for each of my Best Friends.

Adults usually don't like the sugar paste on cakes because of its intense sweetness but sugar paste creations are pretty so to balance the looks with great taste, I made my signature chocolate cake with chocolate ganache as the base. This particular one was made with Willie Wonky's 100% Chocolate ordered via mail order all the way from England because my BFFs are all chocolate lovers. Each friend took their BFF home in small little boxes and we ate the chocolate cake.
